Object permanence is the idea that people or things exist when we’re not looking right at them. Your husband or wife doesn’t cease to exist when you leave for work, only reappearing the moment you walk back in the door or something.

Yet for folks like me, it’s not that simple.

You see, while I recognize that my wife who is asleep right at this moment still exists despite being out of my sight, there are a lot of people who are important to me that I’m not even remotely thinking about right this second.

I’m also not thinking about a plethora of other things that I probably should be. What are some examples? Damned if I know. In my brain, they don’t exist.
